"Pudding Monsters" Game Guide (Part 1)

( *** Update *** (28th May 2013):  I've already posted the Part 4 (for Episode 5) of my guide for this game a few days ago but I haven't updated this article yet because I'm busy recently.

I've finished checking through all the earlier levels and ZeptoLab didn't change any of the old levels this time.  I've also reset and replayed the game a few times to figure out the exact conditions to unlock the "crown" mode in ver. 1.2 and surprisingly, they're the same as in ver. 1.1 as described below.

For the time being, please read the article NEW "Sky View" Update for "Pudding Monsters" ver. 1.2 regarding the NEW "Hints" feature, which replaces the old "Mushroom Boost" feature mentioned below. )

( The article below was last updated on 28th February 2013:  I've included the changes made in "Pudding Monsters" ver. 1.1 and moved my tips for the achievements and extra solutions from the "comments section" to the end of this article so as to sort them out properly. )

ZeptoLab's new game "Pudding Monsters" is actually a casual puzzle game similar to other block-sliding puzzle games but it has smooth gameplay, cute graphics, nice music and sound effects like the "Cut The Rope" games.  You can watch the official demo video by ZeptoLab above.

Its website is at http://www.puddingmonsters.com/ and it's currently available for iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices.  You can also visit its Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/zeptomonsters for more information.

This game does not give you a score like the "Cut The Rope" games, so there're only achievements to be gained and NO leaderboard.  I think most casual players and kids will like this game but competitive players who like to play for high scores may feel a bit disappointed.

You can take your own sweet time to solve the puzzles because there's no "timing" element like in the "Cut The Rope" games.  Another thing is that there's no distinction between solving the puzzles using more or fewer number of steps, so you can use whatever workable method to solve them.

*** CHANGES in ver. 1.1 ***

(A) 7 Levels have been changed:
(1) 1-3
(2) 2-13
(3) 2-14
(4) 3-6
(5) 3-16
(6) 3-19
(7) 3-20

(B) Previously in ver. 1.0 (when there were only 3 episodes of 25 levels each = 75 levels), before you complete Level 3-24, the 3 levels 1-25, 2-25 and 3-25 (called "bonus levels" in ver. 1.0) located at the bottom-right of the level selection menus were "hidden" and not shown.  Now they can be seen at the start, view the new screenshot below which I took after resetting the game and replaying the 1st few levels.  I shaded the Level 1-25 in "red" below, previously in ver. 1.0 you can only see empty space over there before you complete Level 3-24.

Previous "Bonus Levels" like 1-25 are no longer "hidden"

Below is the OLD message in ver. 1.0 that you will see after completing Level 3-24:

OLD Message in ver. 1.0 after Completing Level 3-24

Below is the NEW message in ver. 1.1 that you will see after unlocking the "Crown Mode" (there's no mention of "bonus levels" anymore):

160 stars will unlock "Crown Mode" & Episode 4 in ver. 1.1

To unlock the "Crown Mode" in ver. 1.1, you have to do 2 things:
(1) Obtain at least 160 stars (this is the same requirement to unlock Episode 4).
(2) Visit the "Level Selection Menu" for Episode 4 because the above message will ONLY appear when you've navigated to this menu.

Hidden "Crown" Features

All "Crowns" in Episode 1 (No star for levels 1-1 and 1-2)

View the screenshot above.  After unlocking the "Crown Mode", "crown" symbols will appear in the level selection menus for those levels which you've earned them.  To earn the "crown" for a level, you have to solve the puzzle with all the possible number of stars that can be gained (0, 1, 2 and 3 when applicable).

Please look at the following "level completion" screenshots and read the comments under them:

"Crown" needs 0, 1, 2 and 3 stars (still need 1 and 2 stars)

"Crown" ONLY needs 1, 2 and 3 stars (still need 1 star)

"Crown" already obtained, requirements no longer shown

Before unlocking the "Crown Mode", the "green circled regions" in the 3 screenshots above would be empty.

There're 2 types of in-app purchase items which are optional:

(1) Unlock All Episodes - you need 40 stars to play Episode 2, 100 stars to play Episode 3 and 160 stars to play Episode 4.  This item is for impatient people who don't want to spend time earning the stars.  You'll be prompted to buy this item if you try to access a "locked" episode.  Currently the price is US$4.99 but they may change this later.  It's actually shown in local currency, for me I have to pay S$5.98 (Singapore dollars).  View the 3 screenshots below which I took when I only had 6 stars (look at bottom right corner, "6/294"):

Episode 4 is currently "locked" (need 160 stars)

This message appears if you tap on the "Key" symbol

This message appears if you tap on any other area

(2) Mushroom Boost - if you don't know how to pass a level, you can either view the solutions of others in YouTube, etc. or purchase this.  There's a "mushroom" icon at the bottom right corner of the gameplay screen ("red circled regions" in screenshots below).  Just tap on it to clear the present level with 3 stars.  Initially you're given 1 free use of this and when the count drops to 0 and you still tap on it, you'll see a menu like the one below:

Costs of "Mushroom Boost" (in Singapore dollars)
In U.S. currency, the prices are: 6 for US$1.99, 12 for US$3.99, 25 for US$5.99 and 50 for US$9.99.  They may change the prices in future.

Below I show you what happened when I executed the "Mushroom Boost" for Level 3-23:

"Mushroom Boost" (left 6 uses)

"Mushroom Boost" executed halfway (left 5 uses now)

Level 3-starred with "Mushroom Boost"

Later I'll show you the solution for this tricky level and others.  All the different monster types, obstacles and special items will be introduced.

Meaning of "monster" and "obstacle"

To keep the discussions brief:
(1) I use "monster" to refer to both pudding monster and "eye" (behaves like pudding monster and also obstacle).

(2) I use "obstacle" to refer to "normal" obstacle, "eye", "spring", the "green goo" left by the "green" pudding monster, etc.

The "eye" has to combine with a "red pudding spill" to transform into a "red" pudding monster.  Before the transformation, it moves in the same way as a pudding monster but when pudding monsters or other "eyes" touch it, it behaves like an obstacle.

Rules of the Game

(1) The "red" pudding monster is the "normal" pudding monster type and when pudding monsters of any type are "stuck" together, they change to this type.

(2) In this game, you can only move a "monster" in 4 possible directions: up, down, left and right.  "Sleepy" pudding monsters cannot move until they've been "touched" by other pudding monsters, after that they'll become part of the merged "red" pudding monster.

(3) You can only move a "monster" in a certain direction if it can meet another "monster" or "obstacle", otherwise you would have failed the level and start from the beginning again.

(4) When 2 or more pudding monsters meet, they merge into 1 bigger "red" pudding monster.  The level is completed when ALL the "eyes" have been transformed into pudding monsters and there's only 1 pudding monster left.  An exception would be those levels which start with only 1 pudding monster like levels 3-1 and 3-2 where you have to "clone" the single pudding monster first and then merge all the monsters into 1 big monster again.

(5) The number of stars covered by the body of the final pudding monster will determine how many stars you have obtained for the level.  So the order of the moves is sometimes very important as it may change the position or shape of the monster.

3-Star Solution for Level 1-8

The "red" pudding monster is circled in red while the "sleepy" pudding monster is circled in blue below.

Level 1-8: Steps 1 and 2 ("sleepy" monsters can't move yet)

Level 1-8: Steps 3 and 4 (the cups are "normal" obstacles)

Level 1-8: Step 5 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 1-13

The "green" pudding monster circled in green below leaves a trail of "sticky" green goo as it moves.

Level 1-13: Step 1

Level 1-13: Step 2 ("green" monster leaves trail of green goo)

Level 1-13: Step 3 (the green goo can "stick" monsters)

Level 1-13: Step 4

Level 1-13: Step 5 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 1-20

The "blue ice" circled in blue below behaves like a "1-time" obstacle.

Level 1-20: Step 1 (blue ice is a "1-time" obstacle)

Level 1-20: Step 2 (previous blue ice broke into fragments)

Level 1-20: Step 3

Level 1-20: Step 4 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 1-25

Level 1-25: Step 1

Level 1-25: Step 2

Level 1-25: Step 3

Level 1-25: Step 4 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 2-3

The "purple" pudding monsters in screenshot below move together and you have to make sure all of them can make legal moves (can touch either another "monster" or "obstacle").  When a "purple" pudding monster has been merged with another pudding monster to become a bigger "red" pudding monster, it'll no longer be a "purple" pudding monster.

Level 2-3: Step 1 ("purple" monsters move together)

Level 2-3: Steps 2 and 3

Level 2-3: Step 4 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 2-13

The "hybrid" obstacle circled in yellow below (ZeptoLab named it as "tunnel") allows "monsters" to pass through its flat (ground-level) portion but its "raised" sides behave like obstacles.

Please note that this level has been changed in ver. 1.1 and I've replaced the diagrams below.

Level 2-13: Step 1 ("hybrid" obstacle)

Level 2-13: Steps 2 and 3

Level 2-13: Step 4

Level 2-13: Step 5

Level 2-13: Step 6 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 2-21

The "bricks" (enclosed in red squares below) are "conditional" obstacles in that they only behave like obstacles when the "button" (enclosed in blue square below) is "off" (no monster standing over it).  When the "button" is depressed (turned "on") by moving a monster over it, the "bricks" will be lowered to ground level and no longer behave like obstacles.

Level 2-21: Step 1 ("button" controls the "bricks")

Level 2-21: Step 2 ("button" on, "bricks" lowered)

Level 2-21: Step 3

Level 2-21: Steps 4 and 5 ("button" off, "bricks" elevated)

Level 2-21: Steps 6 and 7 (end)

3-Star Solution for Level 2-25

Level 2-25: Step 1

Level 2-25: Step 2

Level 2-25: Step 3

Level 2-25: Step 4

Level 2-25: Step 5

Level 2-25: Step 6 (end)

This article is getting too long, so I decided to break it into a few parts, otherwise it may take too long to download for people with slow internet connections because I included many graphics images.

Most of the puzzles in Episodes 1 and 2 are quite easy, so I only showed the step-by-step solution diagrams for a few puzzles above.  In "Part 2", I showed the step-by-step solution diagrams for more puzzles in Episode 3 and I included the most difficult ones.  I also showed some of the 0-, 1- and 2-star solutions which are trickier or more difficult than the 3-star solutions.

*** EXTRA Solutions for Episodes 1 and 2 ***

Some people had problems in getting the following solutions, so these should be the trickiest ones in the 1st 2 episodes of this game and I decided to add them at the end of this article.  I only explained the solutions using words to reduce the number of diagrams used.

Previously I posted them in the "comments section" but things got a bit messy, so I decided to move them over here.  They were mostly asked by players in the Facebook pages of "Pudding Monsters", some were asked by readers who posted comments in this article.

  1. This post is very helpful and informative. Thank you for writing it. I was wondering if you could post a solution for crowning level 3-23. I have crowned all the levels except for that one (I have achieved the 3-star and 2-star challenges for level 3-23, but I cannot find a way to achieve the zero-star challenge). I appreciate your help.

    1. I've deleted most of my previous comments here because things got a bit messy. :)

"PART 1" of this "Pudding Monsters" Game Guide is for:
      (1) Introduction (explaining the hidden "crown" features, rules of the game, etc.)
      (2) Episodes 1 & 2 (most of the puzzles in the 1st 2 episodes are quite easy, so I group them together)

"PART 2" is for Episode 3 ("cloning machine", "eye", etc.)

"PART 3" is for Episode 4 ("arrow tile", "magnetic monster", etc.)

So please read "PART 2" for the 0-, 2- and 3-star solutions of Level 3-23 which I posted long time ago (I created the step-by-step solution diagrams for these).

  2. Is there any specific way in which you must make all possible solutions to get a crown? Do I need to get the 0, 1, 2 and then 3 star solution to earn my crown or will I earn it in any different order? For instance, level 1-4, i've finished it 0,1,2,3 star but got no crown, even though not in that order. What am I doing wrong?

    1. To earn the "crown", you don't have to follow any order when getting the no. of stars.

Again, I've deleted my previous replies here because in "Pudding Monsters" ver. 1.1, the conditions to unlock the "Crown Mode" have changed. Please read the top portion of this article. I posted some screenshots to explain the differences between ver. 1.0 and 1.1.

  3. Can you show the 1 star solution for level 2-5? It's the only one I haven't been able to get...

    1. Did you read "Part 2" (for Episode 3) of my article ? I have the detailed 1-star solution for Level 3-1 using diagrams over there and you should post your comments in that article actually.

This is "Part 1" of my article. I already explained at the end of this part that I purposely split the whole article into a few parts so that it's easier to download because there're many diagrams altogether.

I placed the "text links" to the other parts at the top and bottom of all the related articles for the "Pudding Monsters Game Guide". Next time I may add Part 3, etc. for newer episodes of the game.

    1. For Episode 3 (in "PART 2"), I've posted "almost" all the 0-, 1-, 2- and 3-star solutions for all the levels because many people kept on asking for them. I only skipped those easy ones.

These "extra" solutions were explained using words only because I didn't want to add more diagrams in the article.

For Episode 4 (in "PART 3"), the puzzles are generally more difficult than the earlier episodes, so I posted ALL the 0-, 1-, 2- and 3-star solutions for ALL the levels but I only explained the solutions using words.
